Raised in a Minneapolis suburb, Dr. Ullery’s interest in cardiovascular surgery began in elementary school when he witnessed his grandfather’s successful recovery from open heart surgery. His mother, a licensed practical nurse at that time, was attending night and weekend classes at a nearby community college to advance her career as a registered nurse. He seized the opportunity to immerse himself in medicine at this young age and audited nursing school classes alongside his mother, an experience he continues to recall fondly as his mother just retired after a nearly 40-year career.
Following a rewarding undergraduate experience at Northwestern, he received his medical education and graduated with honors from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. He met his wife, an Oregon native, on the first day of medical school and this prompted a slow western migration. Dr. Ullery completed general surgery training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was fortunate to have outstanding mentorship that allowed him to refine his surgical interests to the complex and patient-centered field of vascular surgery. He then completed his vascular surgery fellowship at Stanford University.
Dr. Ullery has served as Medical Director of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Providence – Oregon since 2017. His clinical and academic interest involves management of complex thoracic and abdominal aortic pathologies, as well as critical limb ischemia/limb salvage. In addition, Dr. Ullery serves as an active contributor to Stanford’s Vascular Intervention Biomechanics and Engineering (VIBE) laboratory. He is an active clinical researcher, including serving as Site Principal Investigator on numerous aortic, carotid, and peripheral clinical trials. He is currently the National Principal Investigator for the SOCRATES Trial, which compares the clinical outcomes of endosuture aneurysm repair (ESAR) vs. fenestrated EVAR in patients with short neck abdominal aortic aneurysms. Dr. Ullery is co-founder and executive board member of the United States Laser In-Situ Fenestration of Aortic Endografts (LIFE) Registry. He has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and serves as a reviewer or editorial member for multiple premier surgical journals, including Journal of Vascular Surgery, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Journal of Endovascular Therapy, and Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery.
Fueled by clinical need and admiration for the talented surgeons at Oregon Vascular Specialists (OVS) in Central Oregon, Dr. Ullery is humbled to join his local vascular surgeon colleagues in efforts to expand the modern delivery of vascular care at OVS to the Portland metropolitan area. He serves as Medical Director of Oregon Vascular Specialists – Portland. Dr. Ullery is committed to educating patients about their vascular health, offering compassionate care and comprehensive treatment options, and helping patients and loved ones decipher which management plan best reflects their life goals.
Dr. Ullery enjoys domestic and international travel, chasing his two children and rescue dog from one place to the next, and, increasingly, the peacefulness of the Pacific Northwest.
